Science Week- Skittles Experiment
During Science Week, the class used Skittle sweets to examine the process of colour diffusion. The children placed Skittles in a circle around the plate, with different colours being positioned side by side. We examined what occurred when hot water was poured into the plate and came in contact with the Skittles.
The class observed the hot water dissolving the sugary coating on the sweets, creating a rainbow effect. The class watched the reaction seeing if the different colours ran at the same speed and also observed if the colours mixed and created new colours in the plate. We also examined the Skittles after the experiment was finished to discuss why some of the colouring was still evident on the sweets.
The class also got to go outside to see the results of mentos sweets mixing with Coke!

Science Week- Bee Bots Buddies
As part of Science Week 2024, some 6th class students visited our class to show the students Bee Bots & to allow them an opportunty to engage with them.
Bee Bots are robots that introduce children to programming & coding concepts. In groups, the girls and boys were shown how the Bee Bots operate & were given the chance to programme them to move across the classroom floor, across a grid & even to navigate them around various complex tracks of their own creation!
The class had a great time & were very grateful to their 6th class mentors, who provided great insight, help & patience to our young scientists.

Halloween Baking
During the week, our class got the chance to bake cookies ahead of the Halloween break. The students really enjoyed the the opportunity to try baking with Nancy, especially when allowed to add their own choice of toppings!
Maths Week
Last week, as part of Maths Week, the class worked on halves and doubles using a range of concrete materials. The class used counters, playing cards, dice & dominoes to find doubles & halves of numbers, as well as working on odd & even numbers.
They also completed an exercise on finding the lines of symmetry of capital letters in the alphabet. The class really enjoyed the hands on approach to these topics, as they were very active in leading their own learning & engagement.

Relay Takeover
Active School is a national body that works in primary and post-primary schools to promote physical activities for wellbeing across all class levels. They promote a number of events for schools to engage in throughout the course of the school year. Last Friday, the focus was on a “Relay Takeover” after the successes of both the mixed and women’s national relay teams this year.
Each class was allocated a time slot on the astroturf over the course of the day and they were able to make use of the different equipment available to them. Classes used beanbags, quoits and batons for their class relays and they were allowed an opportunity to practice the skills, techniques, communication and team work necessary to participate in this event.
The pupils enjoyed their active day and are already looking forward to the next event!
